pamela World Business Forum confirms - we are not Gruntled!

Speaker after speaker at this years World Business Forum in New York City reminded us that the world of work is not gruntled. - 1 in 3 people are ready to move on - Up to 70% of people are not gruntled - 30% are disgruntled That's your average workforce - and these people, at any level in the business, and probably your business included, are the people you are counting on to pull you through the bad times and bring your business back into the good times. pamela In the on-line world bring your own service is taking it a little too far!

When my family moved to Australia in the early 70’s I remember one thing capturing the attention and amusement of my Dad almost immediately. It was the quintessential Aussie BBQ. Well actually it wasn’t the BBQ itself but the invitations to the BBQs. Australia is famous for the phrase ‘BYO’ – bring your own. Generally it meant bring your own ...alcohol but often at large work related BBQs or public events, it would also mean bring your own meat. Something that we all smiled at and wondered why… Continue

pamela Sky News Report – Federation of Small Business lodges complaint against Benylin

For those of you who saw Sky News yesterday you may have seen or heard the discussion on Benylin. Amidst the Middle East Crisis was the complaint from the Federation of Small Businesses that the commercial for Benylin causes people who have cold symptoms to take a "Benylin Day" in bed - rather than struggling through a day at the office. Message to the Federation of Small Businesses: Absenteeism rises when people are disgruntled with work and it is as you say a very serious problem. BUT; if you… Continue

pamela Have you completed your new years resolution Week 1 review?

The first 7 days of the new year are a test of your resolve. Your Week 1 review is now due. It’s been a week since you thought about, decided, documented and planned out how you will achieve your 2009 goals or your new year resolutions. So now is the time to do your first review of how you are meeting those goals. ‘What?’ you say. “It’s only been a week, that’s too soon to review my goals”. Codswallup! I say, as I recall the phrase I used in consulting for 20 years when managers asked me ‘how l… Continue

pamela The Power of WOW - getting gruntled starts with you. Keep the wow and stay engaged!

March, Toronto earlier this year - Don’t tire of the great stuff so fast – keep the wow factor! In my last blog I talked about the Power of WOW, so here are a couple of stories, lets say examples of what I mean. I have a Labrador who lives in a little community called The Beaches in Toronto. He's got to be a hundred in people years by now, in fact I think I’ve lost count – its wishful thinking, I don’t want to recall really how old he is.. But to my point immediately - for most of those 100 yea… Continue

pamela How do we getgruntled at work? Getting ourselves engaged ......

Copenhagen, a Friday in April with a respected colleague - one of the most caring people I know...... what i thought about as i got in the taxi and headed back to the airport and home for the weekend. With all my previous ranting about how bad things look given all the disgruntled people around the world there is some good news I think. With all my experiences across the globe, I see the vast majority of grunting can be solved by us – everyday people in every part of the organisation. We can do… Continue

pamela Disgruntled? You are not alone. The stats I've read recently say that only 2.5 people in every ten are actively listening and engaged at work

Sunny day, Amsterdam - a few weeks ago. What i was thinking as I was watching the planes take off at Schipol airport...... The next time there are 10 of you in a room at work, no matter what level you are, management or not, look around you and remember; On average 7.5 of you would rather be somewhere else. And it’s that wanting to be somewhere else that studies the world over agree, are costing you and me, companies, countries, and whole industries dearly each year. And the cost to you is just… Continue

July 7th, London. Bleak rainy day. What's in my head today We all have days where we simply and inexplicably can’t help but grunt. We grunt about corporate speak, delayed decisions or poorly communicate… Continue
