Sunny day, Amsterdam - a few weeks ago. What i was thinking as I was watching the planes take off at Schipol airport......
The next time there are 10 of you in a room at work, no matter what level you are, management or not, look around you and remember; On average 7.5 of you would rather be somewhere else. And it’s that wanting to be somewhere else that studies the world over agree, are costing you and me, companies, countries, and whole industries dearly each year. And the cost to you is just as deep, in frustration, emotion and negative energy, that it attracts as it is the hard currency of the companies you work for.
What that means, is that 7 and half people out of every ten on average, just aren’t ‘there’ when they show up to work.
Here are a few of my favourite stats that I’ve read recently. The stats may change once in a while up or down a few points, but overall, they are consistent, and consistently telling the same story. We are not gruntled.
- 55% of people feel exhausted, confused and unsupported
- 33% feel very negative about their work
- 50% of people are unhappy with their job
- 60% of people believe their employers do not deserve their loyalty
- And now for the real slap in the face – 80% of people at work do not care as much about their organisation or their work
- 60% of people work enough to keep their job
This is all about us. Is it true?
The conference board, gallup poll, consulting companies, HR companies, they all bring stats to their audiences.
If this is really the case, with all this negativity in the air, how on this planet will we break out of the wave of disgruntlement that is out there?
We are swimming, walking, running, playing, breathing in this negative energy each and every day.
If you’re the boss, Ask yourself:
How many people really want to listen to what you have to say…. At work?
How many people really read your emails …..at work?
How many people really do something with your message … at work?
How many people ‘get’ what you are trying to do…at work?
How many people .. Showed up at work today? Really…..body and mind?
If you are not the boss, Ask yourself:
How often do you listen with the intent to do something different or new as a result?
How often do you read something and think YES! I Agree, I need to do that now?
How often do you listen, see, read or hear an idea and think about how to make it work rather than what’s wrong with it?
Its time we just stood up and figured out how to getgruntled!
