The first 7 days of the new year are a test of your resolve. Your Week 1 review is now due. It’s been a week since you thought about, decided, documented and planned out how you will achieve your 2009 goals or your new year resolutions. So now is the time to do your first review of how you are meeting those goals.
‘What?’ you say. “It’s only been a week, that’s too soon to review my goals”. Codswallup! I say, as I recall the phrase I used in consulting for 20 years when managers asked me ‘how long should I let people work on something before I review progress so I don’t get accused of micro management’? My reply is unchanged through all those years; How long can you afford to let something go if it’s not going according to plan? If it was costing you money for every second, minute, hour or day you’d do something immediately so why do we let the achievement of our personal goals slip and then let that slippage go on so long? Because we don’t work to a plan.
How many people actually put a week one milestone into their new year goals? You did? Take a bow. So today is your review day. You didn’t? There is still time so take the time to determine where you expected to be at the end of the first 7 days of 2009.
If one of your plans was to get gruntled this year and get out of that disgruntling job– in other words move yourself from the ‘I hate my job' to the ‘I will place myself in a new job by May’ then the 7th day review is a great indication of how serious you are. It will be a great test of how honest you are with yourself.
For example; Have you updated your resume or at least re-read your Linked-In profile to check if it’s up to date? Have you thought about what type of job you want or how you would prefer to make money this year? Have you made one phone call or had one conversation with someone who can help you start to get placed into another job or start that business you’ve always wanted to start? Have you narrowed down the companies you want to talk to or at least added a few connections to your Linked-In site to help you network more effectively. A ‘no’ to any of these and you’re behind schedule already! In fact, a ‘No’ to any of these and I’d say you’re not serious about changing your world at work, you’d rather just complain that you don’t like your job.
Here is a gentle reminder. This year, if you work fulltime you will probably spend about 2000 hours of your life at work – give or take a few dozen. So what’s it going to be? Will you be spending those hours loving your job? Will you at least like your work? If not, today is your day to get your goal of being in a new job, a new role, a new company or a new business in 2009 really off the ground. Take 30 minutes to review how you will get there, it could mean the start of a whole new world – take on the getGruntled challenge – change your world at work and change your life!
Review your 2009 goals today. Whether you are looking for a new job, starting a business, looking for a new love, getting your book published, wanting to lose weight, or just generally looking to have a better, healthier, happier year – as the old adage says; today is the first day of the rest of your life! Will you be using the day wisely or just motoring along as usual?...a few minutes spent reviewing where you want to be after your first 7 days could put you into any of your dreams for 2009 a lot quicker!
