Speaker after speaker at this years World Business Forum in New York City reminded us that the world of work is not gruntled.
- 1 in 3 people are ready to move on
- Up to 70% of people are not gruntled
- 30% are disgruntled
That's your average workforce - and these people, at any level in the business, and probably your business included, are the people you are counting on to pull you through the bad times and bring your business back into the good times.
May I say with a hint of sarcasm.... Good Luck!
So what are you going to do about it? Hmmm. Here are some thoughts to ponder:
1. You hold the key to getting gruntled at work – as an individual or as a leader – you’re it! You are responsible for how you feel about work...and if you are a leader, how you feel is contagious.
The 21st century leader knows they have a huge influence on other people’s lives at work and so they seek to be the greatest leader they can be - for today and fit for the future.
They think: If I’m a jackass at work and behave badly, the people I work with will take that home with them tonight.
2. 21st century leaders practice their core beliefs; mine are simple but always challenging me to execute: fair trade, being fairdinkum and giving other people a fair go. What are yours?
21st Century Leaders have staying power not positional power. They are tuned in to their people. While they stick to their core beliefs – the table stakes of today - they reinvent their management practices to free people to be all they can be in today’s reality.
They think: I need to always practice my values but how I do business today is different than how I did business ten years ago. The people I work with today are different, they have different ways of working, they expect different things! If I want to keep leading them i need to recognise that this is the age of facebookers. They follow the best not the boss!
3. 21st century people take responsibility for their world at work – they get over the fact that they have to work, they get into their work, finding ways to make it worthwhile for themselves and those around them, and they get more out of their work – a salary or pay cheque is no longer enough, they want to learn, to make a difference, to give back. They getGruntled – about work and at work!
They think: Unless I win lotto I need to work – so I need to get over it and get the best out of it!
When you want to getGruntled – whether you are a leader of others or not – you see the power of wow – you never tire of the small stuff, you bring a level of positive energy to work that shows that what you believe will be believed and how you decide to colour your day will colour your day all day. Life is full of greatness at the smallest scale!
The gruntled stop being disappointed with what they didn’t do or get and start feeling great about what they did get or do!!
4. 21st century people know that ‘everything changes when you change yourself’
They wonder: How come people will take to the streets for things they believe in but find it hard to get out of bed to take to the street that takes them to work? They know the answer is Passion!! Get it and make it contagious!
getGruntled - change your world at work - change your life!
